What is the Community Health Fund?
Through its Community Health Fund, the Mary Black Foundation supports nonprofit organizations that work to promote health and wellness in Spartanburg County, SC but do not work in the Foundation's active living or early childhood development priority areas.
The Community Health Fund represents 10-20% of the Foundation’s total grantmaking; therefore, grants awarded through the Community Health Fund tend be smaller and are often for one-year (rather than multi-year grants).
The Foundation will give preference to applications requesting funds for the following:
- Organizational capacity building
- Economic security/readiness
- Disadvantaged populations and/or communities
- Emerging/unique ideas with promise
- Projects that complement the two priority areas: Active Living and Early Childhood Development
The Foundation will give very low priority to applications requesting funds for the following:
- Equipment
- One-time events
- Projects reaching a very small population
- Capital
- Traditional healthcare
What is Our Approach?
All grants awarded through the Community Health Fund must be working to improve health and wellness in Spartanburg County, SC. The Foundation will invest in three types of efforts – Programs & Services; Policies & Places; and Planning & Capacity Building.
Programs & Services: the implementation of programs or direct services, including the provision of resources, information, direct assistance, social support, or skills to others in the community. Also, this category is appropriate for general operating support for organizations that provide services and work to change policies and places.
Policies and Places: the creation of new or enhancement of existing policies, places, or environmental conditions that, when created or improved, affect programs and people.
Planning and Capacity Building: to strengthen organizations so they can achieve and sustain stronger results.
